Typisk indhold er fra 10% til 20% zirconia. N\u00e5r en revne vokser gennem keramikken, \u00e6ndres zirkonpartiklernes rystalstruktur i omr\u00e5det omkring revnen fra den metastabile tetragonale fase til den stabile monokliniske fase. \u00c6ndringen \u00f8ger partiklernes volumen med ca. 3-4% og skaber tryksp\u00e6ndinger i aluminiumoxidmatrixen. Disse sp\u00e6ndinger lukker igen revnen og fungerer som en energibarriere for yderligere revnev\u00e6kst. Tils\u00e6tningen af zirkoniumoxid til aluminiumoxidmatrixen \u00f8ger brudstyrken med to gange og kan forbedres med helt op til fire gange, mens styrken mere end fordobles.Zro2-h\u00e6rdede keramiske komponenter er dyrere end dem i alfa-aluminiumoxid.
